When and if you do find a place upon which you’d like to make an offer, the agent should handle the negotiations for you and be able to advise you about where the seller is in their chain. This should give you a general idea of how long the process will take. They should also be able to let you know whether any other offers have been made and, perhaps even at what price… If the agent is on your side, they will support you by giving you enough time to mull things over, but not allow for so much time to elapse that you lose out – once you’ve made your offer, any agent worth their salt should stop accepting other offers in order to allow yours a chance of success.
